When it comes to the questions, “Should I repair or replace my heating system/air conditioning system?” you’ll usually get one of two answers. People who install these appliances often will encourage you to replace. People who repair these appliances may suggest repairs. Burlington HVAC performs both installation and repair of these appliances, but we’re going to tell you to do the homework and make up your own mind.
Of course, we’re happy to give you some guidelines, but in the end, you have to be comfortable with your decision, knowing you’ve decided on the best course of action from both a comfort and financial standpoint.
Guidelines for repairing or replacing an underperforming heating or cooling appliance
In making this decision, consider:
Age of the system
Water boiler systems, forced air furnaces and central air conditioning systems are built to last. If you have a system that’s still running well after 10 or 15 or more years of operation, there’s no need to replace it just because it’s old. Unfortunately, with age usually comes a few problems, which we’ll look at in the next two sections. Depending on the nature and severity of the problems, age of the system may be a large factor in making the decision to replace it.
Frequency of repairs
Repair costs for these major home-heating and home-cooling appliances can range from marginal to hefty. What kinds of repairs have you needed on your system in the last 18 months/two years? Based on feedback from your repair technician, what other repairs might be coming up down the road? If repairs are infrequent and not substantial in cost, you might be wise to keep running your current system for a while longer. If repair costs are rising – especially if they’re getting up close to 25% of what a new system would cost – it may be prudent to start shopping.
Estimated reduction in efficiency
As heating and cooling system get older, they begin to perform less efficiently. Less-efficient operation means the unit must work harder, which means it’s going to cost you more to run it. Over time, these extra costs can add up. Along with increased costs, an older system may not be able to keep your home as warm or cool as you’d like it, creating discomfort for you and your family. In deciding whether to repair or replace your system, take all this into account.
